Encanto Tropical: The Evolution of the Sound of Monsieur Periné

Encanto Tropical was nominated to the GRAMMYs 2019 and also includes the hit “Bailar Contigo”, which has more than 45 million views on YouTube. It was featured as one of the “Best Latin Singles of 2018” according to Rolling Stone.
This album culminates the evolution of the sound of Monsieur Periné, from the acoustic Gypsy-Jazz inspired by Django Reinhardt to the hybrid pop of Latin electronic music. The band was formed by Catalina García and Santiago Prieto in Villa de Leyva (Colombia) in 2007, where they initially played boleros and bossa nova in marriages and private parties.
The production of Encanto Tropical was in charge of Eduardo Cabra (Visitor of Calle 13) with whom they also worked together on their second album Caja de Música, which was nominated to the Latin Grammys in 2015, in the category “Album of the year”.
Monsieur Periné was musically challenged to collaborate on this album with legendary artists such as Julieta Venegas from México on the song “Veneno” and with Vicentico de Argentina (Los Fabulosos Cadillacs) on “La Tregua”, a song in which the Colombian Juancho Valencia was co-composer. “The collaborations enriched the band’s compositional experience, but they also allowed for a more complete way of expressing ourselves,” said Santiago Prieto. “I grew up listening to Latin American songs thanks to my mother, especially Mercedes Sosa,” said Catalina. “But I’ve also connected with singers like Buika, Chavela Vargas, colleagues like Natalia Lafourcade or Andrea Echeverri. I am also inspired by traditional singers such as Totó la Momposina, Chavita Grande, Mayra Andrade. I like singers who express a story and who are not only perfectionists in their interpretation.” Encanto Tropical manages to tell this kind of stories to which Catalina García refers. It’s an album that captures the band at its creative peak and is ready to take its place in the pantheon of the greats of contemporary Latin music.
